The Support You Deserve

Holding Hands

Life Doula Services

What is a doula?

We are trained companions and carers that support another person (the doula's client) through a significant health-related or life changing experience, such as pregnancy, child birth, new baby, illness, relocation, divorce and experiences such as dying and loss of a loved one .

We may also provide support to the client's partner, family and friends. Our goal, and role, is to help the client feel safe and comfortable, complementing the role of healthcare and other types of professionals who provide services to  the client.

We are non judgemental and provide information, non medical care, emotional and physical support. Each client will define the role of the doula themselves and we as doulas will adapt to the individual clients needs.

The Principles of Doula Care

Support provided by doulas:

  • Presence. Good listener, witness, calming influence, nurturing, support for troubleshooting challenges.

  • Emotional support. An essential aspect of doula care.

  • Information sharing. Education as needed and desired. The information we provide is non-biased and evidence-based. We do not give advice to our clients. We support and encourage clients to make their own informed choices.

  • Proactive guidance. We anticipate the clients needs and aid making a plan of action appropriate to the clients situation

  • Resources and referrals. Some Doulas may have additional training in speciality areas such as massage therapy, spiritual care or other well being practices ie Music or mental health. When a client's needs/requests are outside of our scope of practice, personal/professional boundaries, or experience/expertise, we will make referrals to appropriate resources and care providers available.

  • Comfort measures and physical support. Can include hands-on comfort techniques, massage, personal care and the care and creation of an individual's environment.

  • Logistical support. Can include household help, running errands, transportation to medical appointments etc.

Non Medical support

We do not perform any clinical examinations or medical tasks. We are not healthcare professionals, we are peoplecare professionals.

Non Judgemental Support

We do not impose our values on a client. We openly and without any bias, explore the emerging needs of the client and family, what is meaningful and important to them, and how we can best support them. Care is based on the client’s values and goals, even if those differ from values of the doula.

Family Support

The individual and their family form the unit of care. We do not take the place of partners, family members, friends or other support and care providers. Rather, we seek to support the optimal involvement of loved ones and all available services.

Holistic care

We recognise the importance of the whole person and provide services in the context of this understanding. Holistic care can also involve information and referrals for complementary healthcare. if the client is seeking alternative approaches beyond those embraced by the medical model.

Empowerment

We promote informed decision-making and foster maximum self-determination for the individual and family. We encourage self-efficacy and self-advocacy, based on identified values and preferences, rather than dependency. We are not advocates and do not speak for our clients. Our role is better understood as that of a mediator who is facilitating good communication between all parties.

Team Members

We are team players with a special role. Our expertise may overlap with that of other professionals involved with the client’s care. These overlaps are to be expected and do not lead to conflicts. We practice good communication and defer to medical experts for concerns outside our scope. We fill the gaps between the client, family and professionals which helps to provide much needed continuity of care.
